5 Questions with Robert Schrader, Associate Director, Medical Device Operations, US & Canada, PQE

1. Please introduce yourself to our audience by looking back at your education, training, and career path.

My career path was ultimately shaped by a unique combination of interests and experiences that led me to my role today as a medical device consultant. My childhood interest in science led me to pursue further education, where I obtained a degree in medicinal chemistry. During my studies, I continued to learn how the human body functions and how scientific principles can be applied to improve health outcomes. While I was drawn to the scientific aspects of healthcare, I also always had an interest in mechanical components and how things work. This fascination with engineering and design led me to explore the intersection of chemistry, medicine, and technology. This ultimately led me to medical devices, where I’ve been able to support products and devices that play a crucial role in many people’s lives today.

2. Can you share more about your specific role at PQE Group? What are your main goals in this role, and what’s your favorite part about your job?

My role as Associate Director of Medical Devices at PQE Group is multifaceted and includes many responsibilities, but the majority of my days are spent as a subject-matter expert supporting client projects, where I specialize in regulatory strategy and quality management systems. Within this role, my personal goal is to provide our clients with the best support I possibly can so the general population can have access to new or modified medical devices that are safe and effective to support diagnostic, treatment and rehabilitation. Knowing that my support often plays a key role in achieving market approval is one of my favorite parts about my job.

3. Can you tell us more about why companies should consider partnering with PQE Group and what type of services you offer to your clients?

Companies should consider partnering with PQE Group because we bring a unique blend of expertise in both regulatory compliance and industry-specific knowledge. With years of experience in the healthcare and life sciences sectors, we understand the challenges companies face in developing, manufacturing, and bringing medical devices and pharmaceuticals to market. At PQE Group, we focus on delivering high-quality, efficient solutions that help our clients navigate complex regulatory environments, optimize product development, and ensure their devices meet rigorous industry standards.

4. Consulting is becoming a popular career path, particularly for scientists and medical professionals. What, in your opinion, are the top skills needed to be successful in a life science-focused consulting role?

I had worked in quality and regulatory roles within the medical device and in-vitro diagnostic manufacturing industry for many years before joining PQE Group as a medical device consultant. I believe that this experience was not only pivotal for me to receive an employment opportunity to work in a consulting role, but it has also enabled me to provide expedited support and solutions to many clients. Many of the problems our clients face are the same, or very similar, to the problems I have already experienced and resolved. While previous experience is not entirely necessary, I believe that in order to be successful in a life-science focused consulting role you must have exceptional communication and organizational skills, along with strong ambition to continuously learn.

5. Now for the fun question – what is the best piece of advice that you’ve ever been given?

This is a tough one because I've been fortunate to have many mentors throughout my life and career, but the best advice I received came from my dad at a very young age: speak up with clarity and assertiveness. When I first entered the workforce, I was hesitant to express my opinions, especially when I feared they might not be well received by colleagues or superiors. However, I quickly realized that if I felt strongly about something, it was important to communicate my thoughts clearly and confidently. Fast forward to today, and I believe my colleagues would say that one of my strongest qualities is my honesty and transparency.
