Buzzin’ Brood Student Spotlight: Fatoumata Sylla, Frederick Community College - BioTech Boot Camp

Fatoumata Sylla is a recent graduate of the Biotech Boot Camp at Frederick Community College, an innovative training program designed to equip job seekers with the foundational skills needed to enter biotech. Fatoumata’s passion for biotechnology is deeply personal, driven by her desire to combat preventable diseases and advance global health solutions. Inspired by the power of science to transform lives, she joined the program to gain hands-on experience, expand her expertise, and take the next step toward a career in life-changing medical innovation. Check out what’s inspiring her right now!

1. How did you get here?

My name is Fatoumata Sylla, and I hold a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology from the University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC). My passion for science isn’t just about curiosity—it’s deeply personal. Growing up, I witnessed the heartbreaking reality of preventable diseases like malaria taking the lives of family members and friends. I remember asking myself, Why does this still happen? Why isn’t there a cure? Those questions stuck with me, sparking a lifelong desire to understand the science behind disease and, more importantly, how to fight it.

I always knew I wanted to work in science or healthcare, but my true calling wasn’t clear until my first year at Montgomery Community College. That’s when I discovered biotechnology, an incredible field that merges science, innovation, and real-world impact. I was captivated by the idea that research in a lab could lead to life-saving treatments, environmental solutions, and breakthroughs that change lives. Determined to be part of that change, I earned my associate's degree in biotechnology before transferring to UMGC to complete my bachelor’s degree.

For me, this career isn’t just about professional success, it’s about making a difference. Whether it’s contributing to groundbreaking research, developing life-saving treatments, or working toward a future where preventable diseases no longer claim lives, I’m driven by the impact biotechnology can have.

2. What is currently blowing your mind right now?

When I first started working in the industry, I was drawn to its potential to change lives. Now, what’s truly blowing my mind is personalized medicine, especially CAR-T cell therapy. The fact that we can reprogram a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer is nothing short of revolutionary.

Not long ago, treatments like chemotherapy and radiation were the only options, often with harsh side effects. But CAR-T therapy proves we’re entering a new era, one where medicine is tailored to the individual, offering real hope for diseases once thought untreatable. Seeing how far we’ve come, and knowing this is just the beginning, makes me even more excited to be part of this field.

3. If you could explain yourself right now in only emojis, what would those be?

These five emojis perfectly capture who I am . ❤️ Represents my passion for science and my drive to make a meaningful impact in the life sciences industry. The lightbulb symbolizes my curiosity and love for learning—always seeking new knowledge and ways to push the boundaries of what’s possible in different areas of my life.

Outside of work, you’ll often find me lacing up my running shoes because when I’m not busy with research and science, I’m training for my next race. Running isn’t just a hobby for me; it’s a way to challenge myself, stay focused, and clear my mind. Just like in science, progress takes dedication and persistence, and I thrive on that journey. I’m also passionate about anything outdoors⛰️, I love hiking, and exploring new trails. Nature is my escape—it keeps me grounded and reminds me of the beauty and complexity of the world we live in.

Finally, ✨ captures my excitement for the future. Whether in my career, training for a race, or exploring the outdoors, I’m always pushing forward—driven by curiosity, passion, and a desire to make a difference.

4. If you could travel into the future… What does your LinkedIn Headline say?

CEO | Biotechnology Innovator | Engineering the Future of Medicine & Global Health Solutions|

In the future, my LinkedIn headline will reflect the impact I aspire to make in the life sciences industry. As the CEO of a leading biotechnology company, I envision driving breakthrough innovations in next-generation therapeutics, bioengineering, and global health solutions, pushing the boundaries of medicine to create treatments that are not only effective but also accessible to those who need them most. To get there, I am committed to expanding my expertise through advanced education, collaborative projects, and mentorship from industry leaders, ensuring that I am equipped to transition from the bench to the boardroom.

5. If you had unlimited resources to start your own company, what problem would you solve? What would be the name of your company?

If I had unlimited resources to start my own company, I would dedicate it to expanding access to STEM education in remote and underprivileged areas around the world. Growing up, I saw firsthand how the lack of resources and opportunities can hold back brilliant minds with limitless potential. There are so many future scientists, innovators, and problem-solvers out there who may never get the chance to explore their talents simply because of where they were born. I want to change that.

My company would focus on building hands-on science programs, equipping schools with proper lab facilities, and connecting students with mentors in the biotech and healthcare industries. Science should not be a privilege, it should be an opportunity available to all. Imagine the breakthroughs we could achieve if more young minds had the chance to dream, experiment, and innovate.

I haven’t thought of a name yet, but the mission is very clear: to empower the next generation of scientists, no matter where they come from. Because the future of medicine, technology, and innovation depends on who gets the chance to learn today.
