Buzzin’ Brood: Student Spotlight – Maureen Lo, FCC Biotech Bootcamp Graduate

From managing a household to pioneering a career in biotech, Maureen Lo from New Market, MD is channeling her passion for problem-solving into a field that transforms lives.

How did you get here?

I have had the privilege of being a stay-at-home mom for the past 13 years, a role I proudly regard as a ‘Project Manager’ for my three children and my husband in terms of organization, problem-solving skills, risk management, adaptability, time management, and communication. As a family, we experienced our oldest child go through an oral tumor twice this past 3 years. After deciding to come back to the workforce with extensive career research, I am eager to be part of an industry that will allow me to make meaningful contributions and create a lasting impact. Seeing the profound impact biotechnology can have on families inspires me deeply. It would be a dream come true to contribute to this transformative industry and play a role in shaping innovative solutions that improve lives.

Selected as one of 16 participants from a competitive pool of 70 applicants, I completed the Frederick Biotech Boot Camp in 2025, where I gained foundational knowledge of biomanufacturing, complemented by valuable hands-on experience in a simulation lab. I am excited to apply these skills as I embark on this next chapter of my career in biotechnology.

What is currently blowing your mind right now? 

What’s blowing my mind right now is how biotechnology can transform lives in ways we once thought were impossible. From rewriting faulty genes to curing genetic diseases, biotech is reshaping the healthcare landscape. It’s incredible to witness the concept of personalized medicine becoming a reality, where treatments are tailored to an individual’s unique genetic makeup, unlocking possibilities we could only dream of before.

Stepping into the biotechnology industry is an exciting journey with so many opportunities for innovation and making a real impact. I am thrilled to embrace the drive to push the boundaries of what's possible.
