Tomorrow, Virginia will take center stage in the global innovation spotlight as the Startup World Cup Virginia Regional Finals arrives at the Sandler Center in Virginia Beach.
Hosted by Innovate Hampton Roads and Innovate 757 in collaboration with Pegasus Tech Ventures, the competition is part of an international series spanning more than 100 locations worldwide. One winner will earn the chance to advance to the Grand Finale in San Francisco this fall, competing for a $1 million investment prize.
While the event will showcase entrepreneurs across multiple industries, some of the most exciting contenders come from the biotech, medtech, and digital health sectors–areas where Virginia has been steadily building a reputation as a hub for transformative innovation.
Life Sciences Leaders to Watch
Among the ten finalists, Avant Genomics, Luminoah, and SurgicalEd VR stand out as companies redefining the future of medicine and patient care. Two digital health platforms–EdLogics and NGZ AI–further highlight Virginia’s strength at the intersection of healthcare and technology.
- Avant Genomics is revolutionizing blood-based cancer detection with a liquid biopsy preparation platform that promises faster turnaround times, lower costs, and broader access to precision oncology.
- SurgicalEd VR is leveraging virtual reality, haptics, and AI coaching to train surgeons more effectively, reducing reliance on cadavers and in-person faculty while improving outcomes for patients.
- EdLogics is transforming health literacy with a digital engagement platform that empowers individuals and communities to better understand and manage their health.
- NGZ AI, a veteran-led company, is pioneering ethical AI solutions to improve healthcare delivery in the Department of Defense and VA systems.
- Luminoah – Charlottesville, VA–based MedTech company transforming chronic disease care through the world’s first closed-loop personalized enteral nutrition system. Their compact, data-enabled platform simplifies tube feeding, enhances patient mobility, and delivers real-time insights to caregivers and clinicians. Inspired by founder Neal Piper’s experience caring for his son during pediatric cancer treatment, Luminoah is reimagining enteral nutrition with smarter, connected solutions designed to improve quality of life for millions of patients worldwide.
Virginia’s Momentum in Medtech
The inclusion of companies like Luminoah and Avant Genomics in the Startup World Cup speaks to the strength of Virginia’s medtech ecosystem. Investors and leaders in the region are paying close attention.
Rich Diemer, Managing Director of CAV Angels, expressed his enthusiasm and support for two of the 2025 World Cup finalists as Luminoah is a CAV Angels portfolio company and Avant Genomics was presented to CAV investing members in a recent All Member Pitch.
Diemer commented that “Having 2 local Charlottesville headquartered companies in the World Cup event was a testimony to the Med-tech innovation being nurtured and funded locally.”
CAV Angels is a non-profit network composed of UVA alumni, faculty, parents, students and friends of the University whose mission is to be recognized as one of the most esteemed and effective angel groups in the country by catalyzing UVA alumni’s engagement in the burgeoning entrepreneurial ecosystem. The group has invested over $28 million in some 60 portfolio companies with approximately 40% that reside in the healthcare space.
John Newby, CEO of Virginia Bio, echoed this sentiment:
“Virginia is home to bold founders and transformative ideas, and the Startup World Cup showcases that spirit on a global stage. We’re proud to see the Commonwealth’s entrepreneurs competing for investment, recognition, and the chance to change the future of health, technology, and beyond. Events like this prove that innovation doesn’t just happen in Silicon Valley it happens right here in Virginia.”
Why You Should Attend
The Startup World Cup Virginia Finals are strongly rooted in community. Last year’s champion, ivWatch, placed third globally, proving that Virginia startups can stand toe-to-toe with the world’s best. This year’s lineup promises to raise the bar even higher.
As Tim Ryan, Executive Director of Innovate Hampton Roads, noted, last year’s energy “blew the roof off the building.” With this year’s event moving to the larger Sandler Center, the stakes, and the excitement, are even greater.
Whether you’re an investor seeking the next big opportunity, a founder looking for inspiration, or simply someone passionate about innovation, the Startup World Cup offers a chance to witness game-changing ideas in action.
